Pelham Middle School Recognized as New York State and National School of Character

Pelham Middle School is proud to announce that it has been officially reaffirmed as both a New York State School of Character and a National School of Character by Character.org. This distinguished honor, which was first earned in 2021, reflects the school’s sustained commitment to fostering a culture where students lead with integrity, responsibility, and respect.

The State School of Character designation honors schools that exemplify the 11 Principles of Character Education, aligning school culture, relationships, and learning experiences with shared core values. The National School of Character distinction is awarded to schools that serve as exemplary models, integrating character development into academics, leadership, and community engagement.

As part of the reapplication process, the school was tasked with demonstrating how each of the 11 principals were used to shape culture within the school. This rigorous process included a lengthy written application, an analysis of school data and interviews with Principal Lynn Sabia and Assistant Principal Dr. Maria Thompson, a team of teachers and student representatives.

“This recognition reflects the extraordinary commitment of our students, faculty, and staff to building a school community grounded in character, compassion, dignity, and excellence,” said Lynn Sabia, Principal. “We want Pelham Middle School to be a place where every student feels seen, heard, valued, and a true sense of belonging. We want to empower our students to lead with integrity and grow as thoughtful, responsible citizens.”

“We are honored to once again receive this distinction, which speaks to the intentional work taking place each day throughout our school,” said Dr. Maria Thompson, Assistant Principal. “Character education is embedded in the student experience and helps prepare young people to thrive.”

This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication, professionalism, and care of the school’s outstanding faculty and staff, whose daily efforts create a supportive and inspiring environment for students. Special appreciation is also extended to the teachers and staff members who contributed to the application process.

Pelham Middle School also extends sincere gratitude to its students, whose leadership, kindness, and commitment to the school community bring its core values to life each day.

The school thanks its families and the greater Pelham community for their continued partnership and support. This recognition is a celebration of the collective commitment that makes Pelham Middle School a place where character, learning, and leadership flourish.
